Jesus said, “He must needs go through Samaria.” Jesus knew that He was keeping an appointment that God had set up for Him long ago to meet the Samaria woman at Jacob’s Well who, was lost and dying and going to Hell. A meeting that would break down the barriers of talking with women, of talking with women outside your caste, of talking to a flagrantly sinning woman, and of opening up the door that would let Gentiles into the Throne Room of God. Jesus knew “He must needs” get to the well at the 6th hour, which is 12:00 noon when the woman would be at the Well at the hottest hour of the day to avoid the other women of the town. “He must needs” get there to redeem her, to tell her He was the Messiah. When He got there He got His disciples out of the way so that they would not interfere.
He wanted to show the woman that God cared for her and loved her no matter what she had done. Its like us, God loves us and cares for us so matter what we have done. Jesus offers her “Living Water,” the Holy Spirit, and “Eternal Life”! But, she was not having any of that, the woman wanted a stream of physical water so that she did not have to go back to the well ever again. Just like us, we say thanks, but no thanks Jesus, why don’t You wait for a more convenient time, wait for a time that I am not having so much fun, wait for a time when I think it is the right time, Jesus why don’t You just give me what I asked for?? Then, Jesus says things that can only come from the Messiah - she finally believes!!! God’s penny drops and she gets so excited that she runs back to her town, forgetting her water pot, to tell the townsfolk about Jesus. She scattered and went “on Mission with Jesus, for the Glory of God and with the Power of the Holy Spirit.” Let us remember, `that the woman did confess her sins to Jesus and was forgiven by Jesus.
So the woman left the well with her physical water, but what was of more value and of great moment to that woman and to us, is that she and we leave JESUS with His “Living water” (the power of the Holy Spirit) and the promise of “Eternal Life” because we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and died on the Cross for us and rose from the dead.
Three quotes from John Piper's book, Finally Alive.
"Implied in what we have seen in this book so far is the truth that God's role in bringing about the new birth is decisive, and our role in bringing about the new birth is essential. If these things are so, what should we be doing to help unbelievers to be born again? The answer is: Tell people the good news of Christ from a heart of love and a life of service."
2 Corinthians 4:5 (Proclaiming Christ as Lord and offering ourselves as servants.)
"If you are going to be free from malice and deceit and hypocrisy and envy and slander--if you are going to tell the gospel from a heart of love and a life of service--then you must hunger and thirst for the word of God the way babies hunger and thirst for milk." (1 Pet. 2:1-3)
"We will spread the seed of God's mighty regenerating power if we have tasted that the Lord is good. The Lord is our delight. The Lord is our Treasure. The Lord is our meat and milk and water and wine. This tasting happens through the word of God. May God loosen our tongues and make us bold gospel-tellers because we are drunk with the wine of the word of God and the goodness of the Lord."
What I meant by the quotes... was similar to what you've already been preaching! We don't have to "muster up" a calling or a mission. Our calling, and our mission is to treasure Christ. (We can only do that if we are born again!) And, if we treasure Christ, then the Holy Spirit will bring about His mission and His calling. We will learn to hear the Holy Spirit, as He whispers to us, "This is the way, walk in it." We will learn to love, because that love, that "sending", that mission, and that calling is all part of the essential nature of the God we treasure. And He is conforming us to His likeness by His Spirit.
